Sperm donation is where a male donates his sperm for the purpose of inseminating a female and achieving pregnancy. The sperm may be donated privately (directly to intended recipient) , sperm bank or to a fertility clinic. The sperm can than be used in any ART procedure, including IUI, IVF or ICSI. The primary recipients for donor sperm are single woman, same sex couples or heterosexual couples with infertility due to male factor.
Egg donation is a process in which a woman donates eggs for the purpose of assisted reproduction. Patients may seek egg donation for a number of reasons, for example when a patient is no longer able to produce eggs or the eggs are of extremely poor quality. An egg donor can be a family member or friend. Donors can also be available from accredited egg donor agencies or from the fertility clinic. There are strict guidelines for egg donation set by the South African Society of Reproductive Medicine (SASREG).
